Oklahoma State’s biggest star has also been its most visible athlete. Ollie Gordon’s commitment to supporting OSU sports has players and coaches thankful.

STILLWATER — Standing in the middle of a blue, indoor tennis court, Ollie Gordon waved an orange Oklahoma State flag and did what thousands of people did for him in the fall.

He cheered.

Gordon has been an easy-to-spot attendee at OSU basketball games — men’s and women’s — as well as Cowgirl tennis matches. He’s not a passive observer. 

He danced to “Baby Shark” with elementary school children and led the halftime “Orange Power” chant at a Cowgirl basketball game in November. On Feb. 3, he performed the traditional flag waving between doubles and singles matches at OSU’s home match against Pepperdine.

Ollie Gordon just led the OSU spirit run at the Greenwood Tennis Center. He’s been everywhere since winning the Doak Walker Award.

Why does the star running back with a Doak Walker Award to his name spend so much time supporting other OSU athletes?

“I’ve got to come out and support,” Gordon said while folded up on a plastic bench in the north side student section during a recent Cowgirl basketball game. “Why not?”

Gordon said he’s been to every OSU sport aside from baseball and softball, and you can expect that to change with the diamond sports home openers coming in a few weeks.

Exiting Gallagher-Iba Arena can be a lengthy process for Gordon. After a 70-66 Cowboy basketball win against West Virginia on Saturday, Gordon wore a lime green Nike sweatshirt and attracted a line of fans waiting for a picture. In one, he securely held a toddler like a football.

Cowgirl basketball coach Jacie Hoyt has appreciated his presence.

“The support that he’s given women’s basketball and the relationship that we have is really cool,” Hoyt said. “It’s really special. There’s a lot of guys that think they are above those types of relationships and support. That’s not him.”

Gordon sat in the front row for Cowgirl tennis’ 4-1 win against Ohio State in January. Safiya Carrington, a senior Cowgirl tennis player, said Gordon’s support isn’t an act and that he has befriended some of the players.

“I think it’s awesome, the support he’s shown,” Carrington said. “He really supports us and outside of the support he’s a great person. He’s a cool guy.”

Gordon attended a women’s basketball game earlier this season with friends Iman Oates, an OSU football teammate, former OSU second baseman Roc Riggio and senior Cowboy golfer Dillon Stewart.

After the game, Stewart mentioned he was headed to Karsten Creek, OSU’s home course, to hit range balls. Gordon, Riggio and Oates tagged along eager to test their golf skills.

It was cold that day, so Stewart took his fellow athletes to a barn overlooking the range with five heated driving bays. Stewart started his friends off hitting irons, but that club was quickly set aside. Everyone was itching to hit driver. Gordon caught a few balls in the sweet spot, but it was mostly a humbling afternoon with shots that buzzed the grass.

“I’d say Ollie needs to stick to football and not golf, for sure,” Stewart said.

Gordon has even ventured outside Stillwater to attend an OSU game, watching his friend Eric Dailey, a freshman forward on OSU’s basketball team, play against Tulsa in Oklahoma City.

“I’m just proud of the way he represents the program, the way he represents Stillwater, the university,” Cowboy basketball coach Mike Boynton said.

After OSU’s 34-9 Bedlam wrestling win on Sunday, Gordon turned from attendee to emcee. Shortly after the dual ended he was handed a microphone and addressed the crowd from the scorer’s table.

“There’s only one Oklahoma, and it ends with state,” Gordon said, to the crowd’s delight.

“I think he’s the best football player in the country,” Hoyt said. “But he’s a better person. He just has this humility and, it seems, an understanding of how to use his platform.”

At first, Ollie Gordon didn’t want to put his feet on President Shrum’s desk. Then, he got let in on the inside joke.
