OSU will play Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 27.

Mike Gundy said he is giving his team eight days off after OSU’s 49-21 loss to Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday. The Cowboys will rest up and finish their up-and-down season in Houston at NRG Stadium.

It will be OSU’s 18th consecutive bowl appearance dating back to 2006. Here’s what you need to know about the matchup:

OSU’s record vs Texas A&M: The Texas Bowl rekindles a former conference rivalry. Texas A&M played in the Big 12 from the conference’s inception in 1996 to 2011. As the Cowboys looked to establish themselves in the early 2000s, consecutive wins against the Aggies in 2002 and 2003 helped cement them as a prominent team.

A 30-29 win in College Station in 2011 capped a four-game win streak against A&M and propelled OSU to the Fiesta Bowl.

The Cowboys are 10-18 against the Aggies overall. The last matchup was in the 2019 Texas Bowl, a 24-21 Texas A&M win.

Opponent scouting report: Texas A&M became the talk of the college football world in November when it fired coach Jimbo Fisher. The move reportedly cost the school more than $76 million in terms of a buyout.

The Aggies hired former Duke coach Mike Elko, but interim coach Elijah Robinson will remain on staff for the Texas Bowl.

Fisher’s firing came as the Aggies were 6-4 overall and 45-25 in six seasons in his tenure. In recent years, A&M has become known for recruiting. Fisher’s 2022 signing class was the No. 1 rated class in the history of college football, as reported by CBS Sports. Texas A&M’s recruiting class was ranked No. 15 in 2023 and No. 8 in 2021 by 247 Sports.

The talented recruits haven’t translated to equal success. Fisher never won more than nine games and missed a bowl last season with five wins.

This season, Texas A&M is 7-5 and 4-4 in SEC games. Its best win was a 30-17 win against South Carolina in October.

Led by Robinson, the team’s former defensive line coach, the Aggies stake their claim on defense. Texas A&M ranks No. 9 in the nation in total defense this season, and allows just 106.7 rushing yards per game. It will create another difficult matchup for OSU’s Ollie Gordon, who leads the nation in rushing but was held to 34 yards by a stout Texas defensive front in the Big 12 Championship Game.

A pair of linebackers make the Aggie defense formidable. Junior Edgerrin Cooper leads with 17 tackles-for-loss while freshman Tauren York has made 8.5. The Aggies play mostly out of a two-linebacker formation, granting Cooper and York wide range to make plays.

Texas A&M is winless in four games on the road this season but won a neutral site game against Arkansas in AT&T Stadium.

OSU’s history in the Texas Bowl: The Cowboys are 0-1 in the Texas Bowl, although they have played two other bowl games in Houston, the 2002 Houston Bowl against Southern Mississippi and the 1983 Bluebonnet Bowl against Baylor.

How much are tickets going for: The cheapest seat on Ticketmaster is $60, for a spot behind the end zone midway up the stadium. Club-level tickets are priced at $135. Sitting front-row behind the Cowboys bench will cost $170.

What channel is the game on TV: ESPN will broadcast the game at 8 p.m.

Fun things to do in Houston: A post-Christmas vacation could feature a trip to the Houston Space Center or attending a Houston Texans game against the Tennessee Titans on Dec. 31. The Houston Rockets host the Indiana Pacers on the 26th.

Mike Gundy’s record in bowl games as a head coach: 11-6
